About Lilit Hakobyan

Biography

Lilit Hakobyan is an Armenian interdisciplinary artist based in Germany who focuses primarily on Choreography and Photography. She graduated from the Yerevan State Ballet College and continued her studies in University for Theater and Cinema. Lilit started choreographing in 2011 and had her first photography exhibition in 2012. Her two interests, visual media and dance, are seamlessly integrated with each medium influencing the other. She draws inspiration from cinematic imagery to shape her choreographic works, while her photography aims to capture the dynamic atmosphere of the stage.

 

A recurring theme in Lilits' choreographic work is her cultural heritage,by mixing contemporary views and queer culture to break traditions .She also incorporates re-imagined movements of Armenian dance into her pieces fusing the contemporary and traditional.. This is evident in her short film "SLEEPEASY". 

Her first creation "Einfach Hölle", inspired by J.P. Sartre's "NO EXIT", was selected to perform at the Emma Theater Osnabrück and LOT theater Braunschweig. In June 2023  she made her first full-length comissioned creation "The Terranauts" for Theater Hof, based on the novel by T.C. Boyle and in August 2023 she created „Heartless“ for Kannon dance company, inspired by the essays of Hannah Arendt. 

 

For many years she has worked on Opera/theater and Film productions and collaborated with German theatre director Fabian Gerhardt, creating the movement direction for many of their theatre/opera productions at Neuköllner Oper Berlin and Schloss theatre Celle. 

In 2019 she created "Metamorfosis" by F.Kafka for a Film production by Armenian film director H.Galstyan. 

 

Lilit has showcased her photos in numerous exhibitions including, 'Art in Fall' in New Jersey NY, Centrum Hannover in collaboration with Junge Freunde Sprengel Museum and Traça, an art collective based in Lisbon.
